introducing the chaval coat sewing pattern from liesl + co.

I always look forward to unveiling our latest sewing patterns. It's such a relief to finally share something I've spent so much time developing. This particular design has been on my mind for ages, and once I finally got around to working on it, I was absolutely thrilled! However, timing was key—there was no point in releasing a coat pattern during spring when everyone's thoughts turn to warmer weather. So here we are now, finally presenting the Chaval Coat! ![Chaval Coat](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/9c02c7d6c5c091e89cb6bbaa23ebb580.jpg) The Chaval Coat is inspired by classic menswear but tailored to suit women. It's fully lined and packed with thoughtful details that make sewing it feel like a real achievement. Think of the back walking vent, two-piece sleeves, a notched collar with a unique banana stand, and double-piped pockets with flaps. Let me break it down for you. First off, let’s talk about the collar. A notched collar is a timeless feature found on many coats and blazers. Fun fact: in Spain, they call blazers "Americans," which made me giggle when I first heard it. What makes this collar special is the addition of the banana stand at the back. We used to call this a banana stand when I worked for another company, so I stuck with that name. It adds structure and keeps the collar upright, hugging your neck and framing your face beautifully. While most people won't notice it unless you flip your collar, I adore this little detail—it’s simple yet effective. ![Notched Collar Detail](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/94b6fdb83ed06dde567b50496c41c14d.jpg) Now, onto the pockets. These double-piped pockets are a touch of elegance with their flaps, making your coat look incredibly polished. They're also spacious enough for all your winter essentials—hands, keys, phones, you name it. Sewing them is surprisingly straightforward, adding that professional touch without too much hassle. ![Pockets Detail](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/832da6fbac52e7c0bc2cc090a704fb7c.jpg) Then there’s the walking vent at the back. I wanted to keep things authentic, so I included a proper lined vent that looks great from every angle. It’s not hard to sew, and once you master it, you can apply the technique to other projects. The two-piece sleeve is another highlight. Unlike one-piece sleeves, this design follows the natural curve of your arm, ensuring comfort. Plus, the smaller sleeve pieces make it easier to work with limited fabric. The coat itself has a straight silhouette, but it subtly flares out to accommodate a woman’s curves. I love this balance because it works well with almost anything you wear underneath—dresses, skirts, or even jeans. It has a slightly masculine edge, which I find intriguing compared to more traditionally feminine styles. Personally, I prefer contrast, so I enjoy pairing it with something delicate like a pretty dress or a sleek pencil skirt. This coat is meant to be relaxed rather than overly structured. If you’re into traditional tailoring techniques like pad-stitched lapels, go ahead and add that flair. For me, though, I think of it more like a cozy sweater. I’ve made several versions myself while writing the instructions and taking photos for the sew-along, and they’re incredibly comfortable. Despite its tailored appearance, it feels light and easy to wear. Plus, it’s loose enough to accommodate winter layers without looking bulky. ![Finished Coat](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e69b6d4223fbb3dc5d99fadedaa29751.jpg) Tomorrow, I’ll share some inspiration photos to spark your creativity.
