Please join me in welcoming Annie D’Agostino to the blog today. She’s lived in Atlanta for 16 years and has been sewing for much longer. Annie runs State Street Stitchery, a cozy home-based business offering sewing, embroidery, and knitting classes. She shares her life with her husband and three daughters in the vibrant Candler Park neighborhood of Atlanta. Today, she's going to guide us through the city’s fantastic fabric scene.
When you're fabric shopping abroad, you'll quickly realize that sewing terminology doesn't always translate smoothly. To help bridge that gap, we developed the Sewing Translator, which many of you have contributed to and found helpful. We hope it proves equally useful during your travels. Available in 14 languages, the Sewing Translator is also available as a native iOS app for offline use on iPhones and iPads. It’s completely free, so give it a try! You can download it directly from the Apple App Store.

Atlanta may not be the first city that comes to mind for tourists, but it's a bustling hub with plenty to offer. Most visitors come for business—attending conferences, visiting family, catching a game—or simply passing through Hartsfield-Jackson, the world’s busiest airport. However, if you're here for leisure, don't miss out on the city's unique fabric stores.
The fabric shops in Atlanta reflect the city's cultural diversity and Southern charm. People here are friendly and eager to chat, leading to some unforgettable encounters. I’ve met fascinating sewists working on everything from elaborate costumes to practical designs. For example:
- A costume designer for an Elton John tribute show carefully selecting sequined fabrics.
- A young ice skater FaceTiming her coach to finalize performance outfits.
- A drag queen designer searching for durable snap tape for quick-change outfits.
- Two Project Runway contestants preparing their latest collections.
One of the most renowned fabric stores is Gail K Fabrics. With two locations, the Atlanta branch remains the original. The store is a treasure trove of exquisite fabrics and trims. Imagine towering tables stacked with luxurious Italian wool suiting, shelves of Lycra, and rows of raw silk and brocade. The bridal section alone could inspire a fairytale wedding dress!

Another must-visit is Fine Fabrics, located about 20 minutes northeast of the city. This expansive store houses countless bolts of fabric, along with trims, elastic, buttons, and fasteners. The aisles are categorized by fabric type, though the labels are broad, requiring you to rely on touch to identify fabrics. If you’re patient enough to dig, you’ll uncover some great deals. My favorite part? The massive zipper section with thousands of options in every imaginable color, length, and style.

Finally, Intown Quilters is my go-to spot for modern quilting cottons and more. Beyond their impressive selection of Cotton + Steel prints and Japanese imports, they boast an extensive collection of Kaffe Fassett fabrics. Their knowledgeable staff can guide you through the hundreds of bolts they keep in stock.
There are smaller shops popping up too, like TopStitch, which opened just over a year ago. They specialize in garment sewing, offering a curated selection of fabrics and patterns alongside some elegant brands like Liberty of London.
If you ever find yourself in Atlanta, be sure to include fabric shopping on your itinerary. Let me know when you're in town—I’d love to join you. Happy stitching!
