A few weeks ago, I shared some creative ideas for personalizing the School Bus T-Shirt. Today, I’m excited to introduce another fun option: adding lace flutter sleeves! To help you give it a try, I’ve also included a step-by-step tutorial.

This project is incredibly simple and quick to complete. For this version, I used one yard of 5-inch-wide lace. The lace I chose wasn’t anything extravagant—just something reasonably priced and charming. I picked it up for just a few dollars at Pacific Trimming recently.

Here’s how you can create your own:
1. **Cutting the Lace**: Begin by cutting the lace into two identical curved pieces. Mine were approximately 4-4.5 inches wide and 18 inches long.

2. **Adding Basting Stitches**: On both lace pieces, sew a row of basting stitches about a scant 1/4 inch from the curved edge. Leave several inches of thread tails for gathering later.

3. **Marking the Center**: Identify the center of each lace piece and mark it with a pin for easy reference.

4. **Positioning the Lace**: Since a ruffle sleeve won't cover the entire armhole, mark the armhole about 2 inches from the side seams on both the front and back of the T-shirt. Align the ends of the lace pieces with these marks and pin the center of the lace at the shoulder. Adjust the gathered lace until its length matches the armhole segment, then secure it in place.

5. **Basting the Lace**: Use a temporary basting stitch to hold the lace in place. I used contrasting thread here so you could see it easily, but you should match your thread color for the final look.

6. **Seams and Armhole Finishing**: After securing the lace, sew the side seams and finish them as desired. Initially, I considered finishing the armholes similarly to Cherie's sleeveless Lullaby Bodysuit, but I worried about stretching the fabric and making the process overly complicated. Instead, I opted for a serged edge to keep things straightforward. If you don’t have a serger, a zigzag stitch with a walking foot works just fine.

7. **Final Touches**: Fold and press the serged edge toward the wrong side of the sleeve. Gently press the lace ruffle away from the armhole to create dimension. Be cautious if you're using polyester lace like mine and lower your iron's temperature to avoid melting the material. Edgestitch the armhole with a stretch stitch to complete the look.

And voilà ! You now have beautiful lace flutter sleeves. If you want to take it further, consider adding a peplum for an extra stylish touch.
Recently, I took my daughter S to see the New York City Ballet, and she absolutely adored it. Maybe it’s time we explore starting ballet classes together!

There you have it—a quick and easy way to transform a simple T-shirt into something special. Give it a try and enjoy the results!
