The Indian monsoon revival brings hope to cotton farmers

Last week, the monsoon revived in India’s major cotton and peanut growing areas eased farmers’ concerns.

According to experts, in many parts of India, rain has recently begun and cotton has been controlled by drought losses. NC Patel, deputy head of the University of Junagadh Agricultural University, said that the lack of monsoon rainfall this year has had a significant impact on the harvest crops, especially cotton and peanuts. Government officials estimate that the two crops in Gujarat will be close to 70%.

As of August 27, 2012, about 76% of the ongoing autumn crops have been planted and the area sown is about 6.8 million hectares, compared with 8.79 million hectares under normal conditions. In the same period last year, the planting area exceeded 8.58 million hectares.

To date, 2.34 million hectares of cotton have been planted in Gujarat, compared with 2.95 million hectares in the same period last year.
