The splendid days of the textile industry in the Pearl River Delta

Su Hainan, deputy director of the China Labor Association, pointed out that compared with the substantial increase in employment in most cities, Guangzhou and Shenzhen have both declined compared to the same period and month-on-month.

This reflects one aspect of China's structural labor shortage in recent years. It is also related to the industrial transformation and upgrading of the two cities.

He said that the difficulties in structural employment in the Pearl River Delta region may continue in the short term.

Hong Kong's textile production chain was transferred from Hong Kong to the Pearl River Delta in the early days. As China took off, it has matured in more than two decades and has become a major exporter of textiles, creating a large number of industries, employment, and local social benefits.

In the traditional labor-intensive textile industry, with the emergence of labor shortages in the Pearl River Delta region, rising labor costs, and various environmental transitions, the production line has shifted to the Midwest or Southeast Asia to some extent.

Compared with Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, and other overseas countries, the central and western regions of China enjoy preferential government policies, lower labor costs, and Hong Kong-invested textile companies are considering shifting regions.

The Pearl River Delta was once the main export area of the textile industry. This brilliant day will not be repeated.
