Australia Forecasts New High Yield of Cotton in 2011-2012

Australian Agriculture & Resources Economics & Science Bureau (Abares) said on Tuesday that Australian cotton production in 2011-12 is expected to reach a record high of 1.1 million tons, mainly due to higher cotton prices and more irrigation water.

“Abares said in his Australian crop report: “The forecast shows that 7% of irrigated cotton and 11% of dryland cotton have increased, and these two growth have led to new highs in cotton production.

The agency said that last year floods occurred in Queensland and New South Wales and the cotton harvest was about 900,000 tons.

Abares said thanks to more irrigation water, rice paddies are expected to grow by 13% in 2011-12 to about 101,000 hectares, the largest since 2005-06.
