In recent years, straw crafts have gained increasing popularity among consumers, with a wide variety of styles and designs that have captured the attention of both domestic and international markets. Luyi County, known as the hometown of straw weaving in China, has played a crucial role in promoting and developing this traditional craft. Through strategic adjustments in agricultural structures, the county has actively fostered the development of straw processing industries, significantly boosting agricultural efficiency and improving farmers' incomes.
Luyi County specializes in grass weaving, processing, and cultivating grassroots techniques. Each year, the county sees a surplus of 510,000 local laborers who remain in the area, offering a strong workforce for the straw industry. Alongside planting 1.1 million mu of wheat annually, the abundant straw produced serves as an essential raw material for the industry. To further develop this sector, the county government has implemented practical plans, establishing 31 leadership roles for science popularization in straw processing villages. Each professional village has set up science activity sites, with the deputy director of the village's technology department serving as station leaders. Local experts are hired to provide hands-on training in weaving techniques.
The Popular Science Work Leading Group regularly conducts large-scale training sessions in professional villages. Every straw-producing village now has a science and technology training school that can accommodate 50–100 people, along with an electrified classroom for over 30 participants. These facilities frequently offer courses on straw technology, providing valuable knowledge and information services to the community. The industry requires a significant number of skilled workers, so the county has adopted a "training by training and training by worker" approach. This year alone, 85 training sessions were held, benefiting more than 6,300 individuals.
By adjusting the production model of straw weaving, the county has successfully expanded its market reach, with products selling well both domestically and internationally. Today, Luyi has developed three major models: “professional villages with large households,†“large households leading the way,†and “base + farmer households.†There are 31 specialized straw processing villages, with over 50,000 households involved in the industry. It employs more than 200,000 people, processing 16 million haystacks, 30 million straw hats, and 12 million handicrafts annually, generating an output value of 360 million yuan. Products are exported to Europe, the U.S., Southeast Asia, and Hong Kong and Macau, as well as across the country.
As Luyi farmers harness the natural potential of straw resources, they have witnessed the financial benefits brought by the straw craft industry. The transformation of the agricultural structure has led to remarkable success in the straw weaving sector. Luyi straw is now gaining recognition and respect on the global stage.
