Straw handicrafts popular in Luyi County busy straw production pattern

In recent years, straw crafts have gained increasing popularity among consumers, with a wide variety of styles and designs that have captured the attention of both domestic and international markets. Luyi County, known as China's hometown of straw weaving, has played a crucial role in the development and promotion of this traditional craft. Through strategic agricultural restructuring, the county has significantly boosted the straw processing industry, enhancing agricultural efficiency and improving farmers' incomes. Specializing in grass weaving, processing, and grassroots cultivation techniques, Luyi County has created a thriving environment for the industry. Each year, the county generates a surplus of 510,000 local laborers who contribute to the growing demand for skilled workers in the straw sector. Alongside planting 1.1 million mu of wheat annually, the abundant straw produced serves as a key raw material for the industry. To further develop the straw industry, the county government has implemented practical plans and established 31 leading posts for science popularization in straw processing villages. Each professional village has its own science and technology activity center, with a deputy director serving as the station leader and expert consultants providing training on weaving techniques. Regular instruction sessions are conducted by the Popular Science Work Leading Group, ensuring continuous skill development. Additionally, each village has set up a science and technology training school that can accommodate 50–100 people, along with an electrified classroom for more than 30 participants. These facilities regularly offer courses on straw technology, helping to spread knowledge and provide valuable information services. The county also adopts a "training by training and training by worker" approach to cultivate skilled laborers. This year alone, 85 training sessions were held, benefiting over 6,300 individuals. By adjusting the production model, Luyi County has successfully expanded the market for its straw products. The county now follows three main development models: “professional village with large households,” “large households leading the way,” and “base + farmer households.” There are currently 31 specialized straw processing villages, with over 50,000 households involved in the industry. More than 200,000 people are employed, and the annual output includes 16 million haystacks, 30 million straw hats, and 12 million handicrafts, generating a total value of 360 million yuan. These products are exported to Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macau, and throughout China, demonstrating the global appeal of Luyi’s straw crafts. As local farmers continue to harness the natural resources of straw and weaving, they are reaping financial benefits while contributing to the transformation of the agricultural industry. The success of the straw and weaving sector has not only brought economic growth but also elevated the reputation of Luyi straw on the international stage.
