With the recent cold snap returning, many women on the streets of Jinan have been spotted wearing fluffy snow boots. Yesterday, a reporter visited several shopping malls and small commodity markets in the city and noticed that this year’s snow boots not only feature more stylish designs but also saw an average price increase of about 10%. According to industry insiders, rising material costs are the primary reason behind the price hike.
The weather in the provincial capital has been unpredictable lately, with fluctuating temperatures creating a demand for practical yet fashionable winter footwear. On East Shanshi Road, a snow boot store was packed with customers, mostly young women trying on two or three pairs at a time. The reporter observed that this season's snow boots have become a must-have item for winter, with prices steadily climbing each year.
“I can’t negotiate—these are all priced at 150 yuan,†said one shop owner confidently at the Dongmen clothing market. Ms. Zhang, a customer browsing the store, admitted she had expected to find cheaper options this year. “I didn’t expect them to be this expensive!†she told the reporter. Last year, she bought a pair of snow boots on the coldest day of the season for 180 yuan, which she considered the most expensive of the year. This year, she tried to buy early, thinking it would be cheaper—but was surprised by the high prices.
Zhao Zhao, a snow boot seller at the Dong Zhao clothing market, explained, “This year’s purchase cost is higher than previous years. The second batch of goods is already 10 yuan more expensive than the first one from October. Prices will likely keep rising as winter progresses. It’s better to buy now while it’s still affordable.†She added that if the coldest weather hits, prices will definitely surge.
According to market sources, leather and sheepskin prices have risen by over 30% this year, and increased labor costs have further pushed up production expenses. As a result, the overall price of winter boots has gone up by approximately 10% to 20%. A marketing manager at a shoe market revealed that rising costs are the main driver of the price increases. In addition, many brands have incorporated new design elements such as metal rivets, tassels, and fur trim into their snow boots, which subtly contribute to higher prices.
As the winter season approaches, consumers are advised to shop early to avoid the upcoming price hikes. With both materials and labor costs on the rise, it seems that snow boots will remain a costly necessity for the season.
