Mexico becomes the 15th largest cotton producer in the world

As international cotton prices have risen, Mexican cotton production has increased. Mexico’s cotton production peaked in 2011. Since October 2011, this year’s (2014) cotton production in Mexico has been the highest in a year, which is about 30% growth compared to the three-year downturn.

Mexico is one of the major countries for planting genetically engineered cotton seeds. 15 years ago, Mexico began using genetically engineered cotton seeds.

Mexico's cotton planting area in 2011 was 198,400 hectares, and its output was about 750,000 metric tons. It was the 15th largest cotton producer in the world, and the planting area was reduced due to the decline in international cotton prices.

In 2014, the cotton planting area in Mexico increased from 110,000 hectares to 180,000 hectares, and was mainly planted in 6 states. Chihuahua State accounted for 53.10%, followed by Baja California State 22.82%, Coahuila State 11.26%, Sonora State 8.81%, Durango 2.38% in the state and 0.91% in the Tamaulipas state.

Mexico is also the world’s 34th largest cotton exporter, mainly exporting to the United States, Portugal and so on.
